...calou, calay !
a year or two after I moved in here...
the right sash cord broke...
[the left, died years before...]
causing me to deal with window "props"...
trapped cats... and imminent dangerous crashes...
[see "One Lucky Cat"post,8/9]
if you look at the top L & R corners...
of the bottom window...
you can see the ends of the sash cord...
here, a close up of the left...
here the right...
and here...
the little wheel the cord needs to be "on"...
this diagram shows a true double hung window...
my bath one is NOT...
because the top window is stationary...
so you have to imagine this picture...
WITHOUT the counterweight & cord for the top...
[it's the back one...]
we'll pry off the well access panel...
recover the counterweight...
remove the bits of the old sash cord
from both the window & the counterweight..
tie the new sash cord to the window...
thread it through over the "wheel"...
down... inside the window casing...
catching it as it comes to the bottom opening...
and will reattach it to the counterweight...
by threading it through the eye of the counterweight...
tying a half-hitch at the end of the cord...
and then tying another half-hitch to secure the counterweight...
then we'll repeat the same procedure for the other side...
while the window is "out " of the frame...
we'll also apply glue or nails to tighten it up...
years of "propping" have made the joinery loose...
it also needs to be re-glazed...
but that's an outside job for later...
as is obscuring the lower window with a piece of plastic...
or another coat of opaque spray-on paint...
if you look carefully at this picture...
something is missing...
[hint...look at the "sill"...
there is no "ledge shelf" or "apron"...]
ALL the other "movable" sash windows in my house...
have sill trim like this...
notice the small ledge [about 1.5"x 1"]...
and the plain, flat apron [1" x 4"]...
seen here in more detail...
so, after removing the tile that has to go anyway...
that's what I want here...
and the reason I'm celebrating ?
I just talked...
to the "skilled craftsman/cat whisperer"...
who did my nook shutters...
created trim pieces, repaired my French door windows...
and framed-in my stained glass window...
AND...
he agreed to recondition my existing window...
replace the broken sash cords...
build the sill trim...
AND...
frame-in the stained glass window on the top half...
he's not busy now...
so as soon as the stained glass arrives...
he'll come over and get it done...
I also ordered a new sash lock set...
and a lift, in polished nickel...
to replace the rusted & painted ones...
that are currently on the window...
today, I'll get some black high gloss paint...
for the stained glass frame...
and some heavy duty stripper for the hardware...
[all the screws are painted over...]
so on Thursday, after the new hardware arrives...
we'll only be waiting for the stained glass...
after we repair the window...
replace the hardware...
create the bottom trim ledge & apron...
frame the stained glass...
so it can be attached to the top window...
and I strip most of the paint and prep the wood...
then I can prime it...
so when the demo starts...
the window will be reconditioned...
repaired, trimmed and primed...
they won't have to do anything to it...
besides painting it...
I'm SOOO pleased to be able to "save" the existing window...
it won't be "cheap"...
craftsmanship never is...
but it will be "correct"...
besides being "green"...
[this job is generating enough for the landfill already...
without adding a window, thank you very much...]
and it will make me VERY happy...
God is so good...
