...remembrances of things past

I normally don't post pictures that show clear shots of faces, but since I'm not going to name anyone pictured, I don't think anyone will mind.

Remembering music made, laughter shared and a bond ordained in heaven and forged in joy... or to paraphrase Shakespeare...
"... he[or she] who sheds his blood[makes music] with me will be my brother[sister]...
and those who were here, will stand taller when this day is mentioned..."

[I did warn you that I was paraphrasing... OK... rewriting... but the sentiment is the same...]

...going to the dogs, Renaissance style

as my regular readers are aware, I sing with a Renaissance group...
and recently purchased a bass recorder to play in the consort...
we have separate instrumental & vocal rehearsals...
since Bassodude doesn't play recorder...
& Rhythmgirl plays percussion & recorder...
but doesn't sing...

so last Saturday, we had a recorder rehearsal at SilverSops house...
she has 3 small dogs who regularly attend all our practices...
they all love to lavish attention, not to mention their tongues...
and generally position themselves so TrumpetMan can scritch their bellies...

we all get attention...
they like to lick my shoes or toes...
and have tried to jump in my lap...
but I don't have much of one, yet...

Tony, seen here...
trying to keep the beat with his tail...
has his eyes on TMan's lap...
but if you look to the right...
you'll see the edge of my new toy...
it's an old trombone...
which I'm turning into a sackbutt...
[as always, dbl-click on photos to enlarge...]

which along with my bass recorder...
will give me greater agility to provide a bass line...
I found an old clunker mouthpiece to help tone down my normally full sound...
& even TMan agrees that it's pretty close to the authentic sackbutt timbre...

the comedy portion of the rehearsal occurred...
when Tony was fascinated with the workings of my slide...
until, that is, I had to extend to 7th position & bopped him...

that moment had SilverSop in stitches for a while...

but I digress...

as the rehearsal progressed, punctuated with doggie antics...
I had numerous chances to take pictures...
as I don't always play...

here we have brother & sister, Tony & Gina...
[rescued from an abusive neighbor]
along with Edith...
reacting to 3 soprano recorders play very shrill notes...

but that was the "money shot" of doggie group cuteness...
the rest of the time was spent by the canines in more earthy pursuits...

Edith getting her belly rubbed...

then commandering Tonys' bone when he left for "other" goodies...

such as being cuddled in TMan's lap...

but Gina was in SilverSops[Mom] lap...

and pretty soon, sibling rivalry got the best of him...

and SilverSop ended up with them both in her lap...

even while she was playing... for a bit anyway...

for my money, her attempts to play recorder with 2 dogs in her lap...
was the real comedy epitomé of the day !

but having "friendly" lap dogs is not too bad when you consider the alternative...

I know if it were MY house, there'd be yowling along...
and SneakyPie in the middle of things...
not to mention Molly, who by size is NOT a lap dog...
but it never stops her from trying...

which are just a few of the reasons why we'll never rehearse there...

...requiescat in pace, Ms Redheaded Songbird

when I was experimenting with the digital macro & mono-pod on my camera...
I didn't intend to use these pictures for this post...
but when I learned, early this morning, of a former teacher's passing...
their clarity & attention to detail just seemed to fit in here...

Ms Redheaded Songbird was a soprano and a voice teacher...
she began teaching at VOPU the year I was born...
and in 1966, began attempting to teach me to sing, "properly"...
a task at which, over the next 4 years, she seemed to fail...

she could never understand why a trumpet player...
'...with your tremendous breath support...'
was NOT able to translate it into breathing for singing...
tending to sound as if I was being strangled...

and then, there was my "lack of range"[actually, way too low for an 'alto']
[I sang,"tenor" in choirs, in a chesty, faked falsetto...]
and inability to "place" my voice, forward, "in the mask"...
[since my voice was low, I spoke very far back in my throat...]

since all women's literature was,"too high"...
and MsRS was very stubborn about "proper" literature...
I always sounded like I was straining to reach even medium range notes...
and since I know, now, that I was singing in my throat/chest, then...
I was doing just that, even though she would tell me, over & over...
"put it in the mask"... and, "to shape the inhalation with the exhalation"...

she would become very frustrated when I couldn't do it...
I could get it out of my chest, into my throat, but no more forward...
she'd say,"I know that there's a voice in there...
we need to find a way to release it..."

but try as I might, I just couldn't do it...
so I sang tenor & low alto in choirs...
and resigned myself to being a trumpet player...
and not the singer I SO wanted to be...

eventually, I moved on...

to other places & other teachers that I would equally frustrate...
but when I truly learned how to relax while playing the trumpet...
releasing my true sound on that instrument...
I began to see the correctness of MsRs's advice on breathing...
AND forward placement, because they applied to the trumpet too...

years later, after having returned to Mudville...
being a much better trumpet player...
and by then, also an improved singer with an "OK" solo voice...
a bit more range & better forward placement & breathing...
I eventually found a job at a large Catholic Church as a cantor...

the choir[30-40] was in the balcony in the rear...
so cantors HAD to use microphones so the words were understandable...

I had started studying voice again with a different teacher...
who had achieved some success in developing my breath support...
more forward placement & expanding my range to above high C...
even at "almost 40", an age at which the voice is almost always "set"...

he had dubbed me a "dramatic soprano" & had "operatic" hopes for me...
so he had me take a jury for "upper division status in voice performance"...
with intentions of pursuing a Master's in voice performance...
along with Met auditions & a career in opera...

my jury at VOPU was attended by MsRS, who was quite pleased...
to see me,'finally, achieving my potential after all...'
and was not at all upset that it was under the tutelage of a colleague...
she was happy that I was able to sing now...
and that "Brünhilda",[my LARGE, Wagnerian voice] had finally been,"released"......

I passed the jury with loud, flying colors...

and then God did something no one could have ever expected...

one day, while I was rehearsing a solo from the balcony of the church...
& trying to hold the mic far enough away from me so that it wouldn't feedback...
I intentionally backed-off a bit from the volume, going for a high note...
accidentally flipping my voice more forward, into my "head"...
[the elusive "mask" of Ms RS's constant reminders...]

all of a sudden, my voice had a totally different sound!

it was still strong, but "lighter", more flexible...
and with a MUCH more pleasant sound...

the choir director looked at me, eyes wide-open in amazement...
mouth hanging open... & when she could speak, she said...
"where did that come from ?"
referring to the "high F" I had just, so uncharacteristically "floated"...

I was stunned too...
NEVER expecting that sweet a sound to ever come out of my mouth...

"I have NO idea", I said, also wide-eyed...

so I tried it again... and again...
then the entire song[VWms,"The Call"]
and I could keep that focus all the way...
even more amazingly, it felt,"easy"..."relaxed"..."natural"...

singing stopped being something that I had to work hard at...
and became "easy"... I became a "crooner"...
there was still breath support, diction, etc...
but it was SO much easier and I could now accurately hear myself...
when I'd listen to myself before, I was always surprised & a bit disappointed...
now, I could really hear myself...
and there were no more surprises or disappointments...

at my next lesson, I shared my new voice with my teacher...
who liked it very much & encouraged me to stay with it...
so we abandoned the operatic "bellowing" for "crooning"...
and I've never looked back...

what a gift from God!

I had always wanted to be a singer...
and then, at age 40, He had given me the gift of a "solo voice"...

the voice was His gift, but the groundwork was prepared by all my teachers...
especially MsRS, whose words of wisdom finally proved to be correct...
I just had to get to a place where I could "practice" them...

the last time I saw MsRS, she came to a concert at the church...
and heard me sing with my "gift" voice...
she came up to me after the concert...
and told me just how pleased she was...
that I was finally "singing from my heart"...
and that she "always knew it was in there..."

so, rest in peace, Ms Redheaded Soprano...
so many of us have filled this world with song, thanks to you...
and I'm sure that we're already filling Heaven too...

thanks so much for everything...

...still working on it

I've been "jousting" with multiple operating systems...
[ie "I-work '09" vs "Word"]
trying to remember who I have to "export" in "Word" to...
since my Mac operates in "I-work '09"...

turning my "pages" into "Word" or rtf files, etc is easy...
I just have to remember to do it before I attach & send them...
or no one can open them...

selecting music, making sure it fits the liturgy...
then confirming things with "powers that be"...
making schedules & lists...
exporting them in "Word" as attachments for e-mails...
and then sending out the e-mails...

not to mention singing for 2 funerals and a Taizé service...
in the last 3 days... my voice is tired...

not to mention regular choir services...
and the impending Holy Week festivities...
[with trumpet playing coming up fast on the horizon...]

so I'm digging through files, finding & organizing music...

now, I have to make the packets for the choir for Holy Week...
[that's 5 BIG services... lot's of music...]

LOTS of paperwork !

no wonder I'm pooped...

...Renaissance concert afterglow

[this photo is titled;"Wandering in the Woodes so Wylde...
after the piece of Renaissance keyboard music of William Byrd]

last night's concert was really fun...

the venue was just perfect, there was a nice audience...
and we sang well...[we even made a few bucks, whoo hoo !]

I have no pictures of me in my costume...
but hope to have some to share soon...
I was told that it looked good...
as did MizMinka's new costume, which I like a lot...

the others were wearing their usual...

Trumpetman resembles Henry,VIII...
so he dresses as you've seen "Henry, VIII" in paintings...
Bassodude has 2 costumes; last night he wore the "Friar's" robes...
SilverSop dresses as a "Tudor Noblewoman", with a fancy gown...

so with MM, as the "saucy maid"...
and me as an "older, tavern serving woman"...
[I'm too old to be a proper wench...]

we're quite the "consort of characters"...

we try to keep things, "period"...
[since 4 of the 5 of us wear glasses...
it's not a rigid situation, but we do try where we can...]

so when, at the dress rehearsal...
I realized that my plastic water bottles...
just looked wrong...
I looked for something more organic looking...
and spotted MM's blue one, which had always been glass...
[they're now plastic, but still look like glass...]

I asked MM if she had another one like hers that I could borrow...

and when I came out to set-up last night, there it was...
waiting for me, but with an unexpected treat ...

in honor of my part as the "cat" in the "Counterpoint of the Animals"...
a cute "cat sticker" !
and I even got to keep the bottle...
[thanks, MM...]

so it was, a VERY, fun evening...

I really enjoy singing this music with these people...
I always have wanted to be in a group like this one...
and I do SO appreciate the opportunity they have given me...

I just can't wait to get together & sing again...

and you definitely can't, always say that about musical groups...

...a "note-worthy" day

this coming Sunday, after a short service music rehearsal...
we unveil the 2009 Lessons & Carols music to the choir...

BLT & I have spent quite a bit of time searching...
listening, reviewing, doing & re-doing the list...
UnklePhil compiled a demo CD before he left on vacation...

the demo CD, as well as one selection that's on my computer...
are ready to play on Sunday...the only thing yet to do ?
organize and arrange the music...
so for the last few days, I've been working on the "book"...

we purchase enough originals for each singer...
but I've found that working from copies...
which is legal, since we bought the originals...
is better... easier for the singers in many ways...

I print the copies "larger", with editorial markings...
I can also change the page orientation if there are nasty page turns...
but the best idea I "borrowed" from "pit orchestras" & church musicals...

I create a "book" with carefully mapped-out page turns & notes...
completely in order, with page numbers & a "TOC"...
that contains all 12 choral pieces, 9 readings & 3 congregational hymns...
then I make a copy for each singer, plus a couple of extras, punch holes...
and pass out a complete book to each singer...

this saves SOOO much rehearsal time...
passing out 1 bundle instead of 12...
[having the hymns & readings,"in place"...
also means no juggling of a thick bulletin & the music...
during the service...]

most notes & comments are in place, all is "in order"...
there's no,"I don't have that piece"..."I'm missing a page"...
and finding a starting point is easy with sequentially numbered pages...
all the singers need to do is put the "book" in their binder...
listen to the CD and learn the music...

the only "catch" ?

someone,[that would be me...] has to "make" the book...

I started with "clean" music, then copied it...
enlarging it from 110 to 115 %, single sided...
then I spend time putting in rehearsal letters if needed...
marking staves[parts], notating tempo changes...
deciding on page turns, putting in comments...
& marking pronunciations in the "usual" places...
[ie Is-RAY-el, not Is-RYE-el...]
so that we can avoid those nasty nasal vowel sounds...

using the readings and hymns from last year's book...
I "whited-out" page numbers & other unnecessary markings or notes...

then using my L&C 2009 proposed order page...
I worked my way through deciding on page order...
then placing page numbers on the pages & on my order page...

having done that, I re-wrote my proposed order page...
as the "TOC" page, with all pages listed...
for all choral music, readings & hymns...

then I printed-out a copy...

tomorrow, I'll put all the single-sided pages as double sided...
[a lot of exacting work...]

then we can begin the "print" phase...
and hopefully be ready for the rehearsal Sunday...

I love it when a plan comes together !

...listening to my junkmail

this is the time of the year when lots of effort is paying off...

BLT has spent hours writing up "elements sheets" for our service music...
as well as drawing up a potential L&C program...
in all cases, paying very close attention to liturgical correctness...
and aligning musical texts with scriptural readings...
as well as considering the qualities of the music involved...

then he passes the sheets & lists to me, for my musical suggestions...

when I taught jr high band & orchestra [for 17 years...]
I got tons of stuff like this in the mail...
starting with LP's, then cassettes & finally CDs...
as technology progressed from the early 80's into the new century...

I would always spend time, listening to my junk mail...
as a result, I always seemed to be able to choose music with "kid appeal"...

since I've become a choral director the last couple of years...
I've discovered that if I look long enough & listen to lots of stuff...
I'll be able to find a few things that our choir really seems to enjoy singing...

I don't get much audio "junk mail" these days...
but technology has allowed online sheet music "stores"...
to offer audio samples of many selections...
so I've spent hours... listening to samples,"online"...

it sure beats the heck out of listening to piles of these...

or thumbing through bins of music...
getting multiple paper cuts...
and still not being sure what it would sound like...
so when BLT asks for my thoughts...
I'm ready because I've been "listening" online for hours...

here's a sample page from my favorite online "store"...
notice that there are over 9000 selections in this "search"...
believe me, it takes HOURS to work your way through all the possibilities...
you can scan thousands & find 3 or 4 possibilities...
or you can find 4 or 5 good ones on one page of 50...

I download audio samples from their website...
and save them in a folder on my desktop...

I play them with ITunes...
generally several times...
if I find myself humming parts after only 1 or 2 playings...
I find that the choir will generally enjoy singing it...

this an example of a selection that eventually "made the cut"...

it not only offers a chance to view a sample page or 2...
[some selections will show all pages, others, none...]

you can listen to an audio sample...
[some play the entire selection, some only part...others, nothing...]
if I "click here", I get the audio file as a separate page...
that I can save to my desktop...

this one was BLT's suggestion, but the only audio sample was on YouTube...
after ordering copies, I was surprised to find that it was in a book we have...
we needed to buy copies anyway... but at least we get to look at it...
it's a bit unnerving to choose a piece based only on listening to YouTube...

as we were considering several options...
I "remembered" this gem that Dearest Dragonfly had just recently touted to me...
[and we've "had copies of" for 2 years, but I'd forgotten about...]
we listened to it on YouTube & were sold...

I had suggested this one to her...
the choir is going to love singing it...

it's a lovely alternative to "Ave Maria"...
& it has, "our sound"...

so after going through the "stacks", as well as the online store...

& after digging through the service music boxes...

we've cobbled together a Lessons & Carols service...
that while not quite finished [a few details remain...]
has the anthem choices, "pretty much decided"...
& we think that it will be a very special experience...
for all who sing & all who attend...
[Mark your calendars, Dec.20, 2009, 6 PM, PST]

...a choral reunionsong

for many, summer is a time of vacations & travel...

so on Sunday, I was invited to a reunion party...
'cause Dearest Dragonfly & Fr Carioca were "passing through"...

[the following pictures have been chosen with an eye for anonymity...
ie, blurry or no clear faces...there are more on my Facebook pages...]

there were hugs...

long, lingering hugs...

and "green tea"...

more hugs...

and... still, MORE hugs...

there was, of course...lots to drink...

and [behind this crowd...] lots to eat too...

as I drifted about, in stealth mode, taking pictures...
my mind was floating in many directions...

remembering others who couldn't be with us...

too far away, out of touch or with other obligations...
and those, already "home"... awaiting the rest of us...

but still, enjoying the "us" that was for a blessed time, then...
and was again, this evening, if only as a remembrance...

there was a lot of catching up [it's been 2 years...]
kids bigger, new kids or grandkids celebrated...
fun times remembered, "war stories" told...
favorite new music shared, encouragements given...

no one had actually brought any music to sing...
but we didn't really need any...
as everyone's heart was full of song...by just being there...

"... though the singer's gone...the song goes on...

God is good...all the time...
