..."the rain in Mudville"[aka "severe weather {HA !} alert"]

when I went outside this AM, there were puddles...
I didn't hear the rain, but in the winter, that's not unusual...
it wasn't raining as I made my way down to the church...
but one look to the sky made you think that it would start again...

and sooner, rather than later...

the sky was brighter than it had been...
after all we'd had about 9 days of cold high fog & low clouds...
the difference between the high & low temps was only 3˚s on Sunday...
and 5˚ one other day with the largest difference about 10˚s...

only 2 days out of the 9 did the high get into the low 50's...
so we were stuck in the 40's, dipping into the 30's at night...
for more than a week, so the forecast of 2-3 days of rain...
possibly as much as 3 inches, was welcome in most places...

the rain clouds & gusting winds would unsettled the cold, foggy merkyness...
that has held us in its grip for more than a week...
and though I do love the cold, gloomy winter weather...
we really need the rain...a 3rd dry winter would be very bad for this area...

even this morning, all the forecasts were pointing...
to an imminent resumption of the rain...
but when we came out of the church after mass...

sunshine & clearing skies...

the most recent weather maps predict rain resuming again after dark...
carrying on through the night and tapering off around noon tomorrow...

even better !

rain after dark, and dry during the daytime...
when it doesn't keep people from work...

although if we have much sunshine after the rain...
we will have heavy ground fog..."tule fog" as it's known around here...
and when that pattern gets started, we get "socked-in" 'til noon daily...
with late afternoon & evening visibility also severely curtailed...

so as I sit here writing this...
the quickly moving clouds paint the room...
with a kaleidoscope of light & shadows...

one moment, starkly bright sunshine...
the next, it fades into shades of overcast...
while fluffy white clouds tinged with gray...
hurry overhead, pushed by the southern winds that always mean rain here...

and in the distance, far to the south, ominous gray bands on the horizon...
hopefully arriving after dark...
