...farewell, Thomas
last night, I offered him some "people" salmon, which he enjoyed...
but I could tell he was loosing ground fast...
it was the only thing he had been willing to eat all day...
and he wasn't drinking, so his voice was going...
the night before, he waited right by my bedroom door...
this morning, for the first time ever, he didn't come to greet me...
so I went looking for him & found him laying on the heating grate...
and when he silently looked at me, we both knew it was time...
the other kitties had stopped hanging around him...
though just yesterday, they were rubbing heads with him...
snoozing in the sun with him, washing his face...
Sneaky Pie had even stopped laying in ambush & swatting him...
they knew it was time & they had said their goodbyes
the vet also knew when I took him into the exam room...
I held Tommy, kissed him & told him what a good cat he'd been...
and how he would soon see his rowdy friends who were all waiting for him...
while the vet prepared the injection...
though he couldn't meow anymore...
I could feel him purring while the vet kissed him on the head...
then eased the needle, ever so gently, into his arm...
he was gone in an instant...
I laid him to rest in the springtime backyard...
with a rose between his stripey paws...
at peace at last...

Once again your post breaks my heart. But then I think about how much Thomas was loved during his 14years on this earth and how much love he gave to you in that time and I smile. So sorry that you have had to say good-bye to yet another family member. May your very special and precious memories bring joy and comfort to your heart.
...thanks M&CM, I'm watching them go much too quickly it seems...
So very touching....I am a dog person but my wife is the cat person in our house. I shared her agony many times when her beloved cats were dying. They do touch our lives and become family

...hi Greg... thanks for the kind words...
I have shed a tear for Thomas and for you. I know the heartache you feel to lose a longtime furry companion. So sorry I did not come to read about this sooner and offer my condolences, but my life has gotten complicated right now (but this is not an acceptable reason to ignore friends, even bloggy ones).
