on August 9, this was my harvest...
a couple of big "pink Caspians", several medium "jubilees"...
some medium "Charlies' mortgage lifters",
some smaller "aces" and a nice, fat "Mr. Stripey"...
all soft to the touch and redolent with tomato-y fragrance...
["Mr. Stripey" last seen here, just about 10 days ago...]
the cherries need harvesting too...
and there are lots of immature heirlooms...
this is a "green zebra"...
they get yellow-ish, with cream stripes when ripe...
here they are in a box to carry inside...
it's tomato & red onion salad tonight...
YUM!

Lovely tomatoes. I have had a pretty good yield already from my two plants - unfortunately, it could have been better except for the bird predation. I kept finding small holes/bitten spots in the ripe tomatoes - they would get to them before I could. I thought squirrels, but yesterday I was on the phone in the den and looking out the sliding door while I talked. Well, a huge mockingbird landed on my bush and proceeded to peck the ripening tomato I was keeping my eye on! I was livid, but I couldnt' get off the phone and out the door to shoo him off before the damage was done. There was a big hole in the tomato and I had to throw it out. GRRRRRH! Next year, I'm installing bird netting.
I didn't really need that one tomato, though, because I spend Sunday evening making 10 cups of tomato sauce for the freezer from 24 tomatoes, some large, some small. That's a lot of peeling and seeding. This in addition to all the tomatoes we can eat. And there are four in the veggie drawer right now. I foresee a heavy bias toward Italian cooking in the future.

...Calico, I always store my tomatoes at room temperature...unless they are cut...and I have this nifty Italian made tomato "separator" ...the puree goes one way, the seeds & skin go another...
